Smuggling bust is nothing to spit at
brief description
Bridge turns into Tobacco Roadstory
A Mississauga man has been convicted of attempted smuggling after being caught while driving into Canada at the Lewiston Queenston Bridge back in January.
So what did he try to smuggle? Not drugs, not weapons, not money....not even alcohol or cigarettes...although smokes are in the ballpark. He was A half-ton of chewing tobacco.
Ummm….shouldn’t he have been headed in the other direction? Isn’t there a better market down south instead of north of the border?
At any rate….here’s how the bust happened. (And without perpetuating a stereotype, apparently people who smuggle chewing tobacco aren’t much brighter than people who chew the stuff) Irfan Vakharia was driving a commercial truck. He told border agents he didn’t have any personal goods to declare. But something made them suspicious, so they ordered a secondary inspection. Then they watched as Vakharia THREW CASES FROM THE BACK OF THE TRUCK INTO A SNOWBANK.
Yeah, that made them a little more suspicious, and they found the chewing tobacco…which was worth about $40,000.
Vakharia was fined $5,500 and given a six-month sentence….which he can serve as house arrest as long as he doesn’t screw up. We suggest he watches where he spits.
